Former Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse said President Donald Trump was never a fan of his Nebraska Cornhusker gear, telling him that he dressed too casually for interviews on national TV.
During an episode of his new podcast “Not Dead Yet,” Sasse said one of Trump’s pet peeves with him was the senator wearing Husker gear all the time. “One of Donald Trump’s very funny habits is he often reduces people to about two things. And whatever they are, you know, that’s what comes up every time you talk to him,” Sasse said.
He said one of his things was “doesn’t dress well” and “wears Nebraska pullover gear on TV.”
“You could be a senator from central casting. How come you don’t wear a double Windsor tie enough? You wear all that Husker pullover crap. You look like a gym rat,” Sasse said Trump told him.
In 2016, during his first presidential campaign, Trump took his criticism of Sasse’s looks public when he tweeted, “Ben Sasse looks more like a gym rat than a U.S. Senator. How the hell did he ever get elected?”
Sasse’s casual dress went viral in 2018 when a picture of him in a white t-shirt and red Nebraska pants talking to Republican Senators Tom Cotton and John McCain out of Senate office buildings made the rounds on Twitter.
