This smells like teacher's union interference to me. If a paid firefighting unit has all these tests, from written to physical, I don't see why it should matter how a person earned their high school education.
On the other hand, I could totally see how the teacher's union would want to back door control something like this - make it a requirement to have a public school diploma or GED to keep kids in their schools, and keep those tax dollars flowing to them
There was reporting that the education requirements for the job was changed during Coates' application. Who changed the language and when did they change it? How long has that requirement really existed?
Fremont Fire Dept, what is your problem? A 22 year old man with an EMT license and experience as a volunteer fire fighter, and you won't hire him because he was home schooled? How asinine can you be? Considering the number of volunteer fire departments there are, I find it odd there is a high school education requirement.
