Nebraska Republicans warned the Democratic Party is taking a radical turn following several democratic socialists winning primary elections for Congress in New York.
“The Dems Socialist takeover of the NYC Dems is bad for the Dems, will aid the GOP this November, but in the long-run it’s bad for America,” Congressman Bacon said in a tweet Wednesday. The congressman followed up his tweet, noting the “cost of communism.”
“The terrible human cost of Communism: Stalin’s policies led to death of 20 million in his country. Mao killed approximately 70 million Chinese,” Bacon said.
Brinker Harding, who is the Republican nominee for Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District, tried tying his Democratic opponent, Denise Powell, to the democratic socialists who won their New York elections.
“The modern Democrat Party officially belongs to Zohran Mamdani, Bernie Sanders, and AOC,” Brinker said in a social media post on Wednesday. “All Nebraskans who reject socialism, love America, and are frightened by the extremes of the radical left have a home in our campaign.”
On Tuesday, New York held its elections and three self-proclaimed democratic socialists won their primary elections. One of the candidates, Darializa Avila Chevalier who ran in the 13th congressional district, has ties to a group that has called for the eradication of America. All three candidates were endorsed by Zohran Mamdani, New York City’s mayor who identifies as a democratic socialist.
Politico described the wins as a “political earthquake.” Nebraska Democratic Party Chair Jane Kleeb responded to Harding’s tweet, saying that the New York elections do not reflect the views of Nebraska Democrats.
“Also last night and across the country moderate Dems have been elected. NYC is not Nebraska,” Kleeb said. “We elect Dems who look and sound like our communities.”
The party chair also responded to an NEGOP tweet claiming, “Democrats and Independents have gone full socialist.” “We aren’t NYC...just like we aren’t Alabama,” Kleeb said. “Get a grip.”
