What might this have to do with Osborn hiring a former consultant to NYC's socialist Mayor, Zohran Mamdani? Osborn's mental health testing sounds like the old Soviet Union. As AI Overview says, "Soviet mental health testing is historically notorious for its use as a tool of political repression. Instead of standard clinical evaluations, the state weaponized psychiatric diagnoses—most notably "sluggish schizophrenia"—to institutionalize dissidents, effectively criminalizing political dissent."
If you want to be made aware of ridiculous positions and the looney ideas a politician can conjure up, follow Dan Osborn. What could possibly be wrong with requiring a five-year mental health check in order to own "assault" weapons, more sensibly called hunting and target weapons, but "assault" makes it sound military and illegal. Here are just a few, but definitely not an all-inclusive list:
It's an infringement on 2nd amendment rights.
I won't have mental health breakdowns anytime between the five-year increments.
Who is going to pay for the mental health evaluations?
How is the mental health evaluation enforced?
Are my "assault" weapons confiscated if I refuse to submit to the mental health evaluation? Will I be taken to court? Will I be fined?
Shooters with mental health problems can get a weapon from family members, a friend, or on the street.
For every murder committed with a rifle (all types), 20 murders are committed with handguns. But let's focus on "assault" weapons.
What a liar. He says he isn’t out to take anyone’s guns. What is the outcome if someone flunks his made up mental health exam — even if he doesn’t make it so that EVERYONE flunks it? They take your guns. What happens when some lies about you and gets an ex parte red flag order — BEFORE YOU EVER GET TO DEFEND YOURSELF? They take your guns.
How about a mandatory 5 years in jail when committing a crime with a gun. No controversial constitutional interpretation with that one. I think law enforcement would be thrilled. To quote Dan "Most law enforcement will say, yeah, there needs to be some legislation to help protect us as law enforcement"
Leave it to Democrat Dan. I wonder which Democrat operative gave him this idea. And I agree with another post here: this sounds like a Soviet style tool.
Late to the game as always but I'll still throw in my two cents.
First, if Dan truly supported the 2nd amendment he wouldn't be supporting any law or suggestion that could potentially take away someone's guns, which this would effectively do.
Second, the neighbor example is a poor one. People generally don't open fire on other people after hearing one speech like that. Chances are good that that guy's neighbors were irritating him in some way before he made that poor decision to open fire on them

Gun Owners of America will also take issue with Osborn. https://www.gunowners.org/

The man is out to take your guns
