Governor Jim Pillen and former University of Nebraska athletes Roy Helu Jr. and Rebekah Allick participated in a nationally broadcast America Reads the Bible event where leaders from across the country read from the Bible over the course of this week.
The event has included high-profile participants, including President Donald Trump as well as Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who spoke on Friday before Pillen.
Pillen read Daniel chapters 9 and 10 in the World State Theater at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., where most of the readings have taken place.
“This is an extraordinary event, and it is a privilege to be among selected speakers who are giving voice to their faith,” Pillen said in a statement. “Being able to join believers from all walks of life and share the profound word of God is a meaningful and powerful moment for our country.”
Pillen was joined by fellow Nebraskans, including Allick, who was a senior on the NU women’s volleyball team this past season, Helu Jr., a former star running back for NU, as well as members of Nebraska Family Alliance, a pro-life and pro-family nonprofit based in Lincoln
The goal of the event was, in part, to be the largest public reading of Scripture in American history.
“America Reads the Bible is a sacred opportunity to call our nation back to its spiritual foundations,” the organizers of the event said. “Through a public, continuous reading of the entire Bible in our nation’s capital by our national leaders from all spheres of influence, we believe God can spark revival in individual hearts and inspire Americans to carry the Word forward in their lives and communities into the next 250 years of our national story.”
