The House of Representatives passed a bill Tuesday to fully fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement as well as Border Patrol through the end of President Trump’s second term. The $70 billion bill, titled the Secure America Act, was supported by all of Nebraska’s federal delegation.
The bill passed 214 to 212 with no Democrats voting in favor of it. The bill heads to Trump’s desk after an earlier vote on Friday by the Senate to pass the measure.
Following a months-long standoff between Republicans and Democrats, GOP leadership used the Senate’s reconciliation process to avoid a filibuster, meaning they only needed a simple majority, instead of 60 votes, for the bill to get passed.
Congressman Mike Flood issued a statement praising the passage of the bill through the House.
“After months of Democrats trying to defund law enforcement and return to the Biden administration’s open-border policies, I voted to fund Border Patrol and immigration enforcement,” Flood said. “Nebraskans are safer when our southern border is secure and criminals who are here illegally are removed from our streets. This legislation fully funds the Border Patrol and immigration enforcement through the remainder of President Trump’s term, eliminating any uncertainty about the paychecks of the men and women who help keep our communities safe.”
